Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA)
To: International and national public opinion
To: Solidarity organizations
To: Progressive men and women of the world
March 28, 1997
The Tupac Amaru revolutionary movement wishes to let you know the
following:
1. As part of the continued provocations and threats against the
Edgar Sanchez Commando, lies continue to be spread against the
MRTA. We have been accused of attacking a wool shop, a lie that
we have exposed. Meanwhile, the arbitrary detentions of the
indigenous civilian population in the guerrilla zone have
continued. We have denounced these detentions to the national and
international public. Finally, yesterday, March 27, in
circumstances that have become familiar to the political
prisoners in the Castro Castro maximum security prsion, when family
members of political prisoners went to visit their loved ones,
they were intimidated by the authorities, who fired shots in the
air and at the cells holding MRTA political prisoners.
2. The mothers, sisters and other relatives of the political
prisoners reported their concerns to various human rights
organizations and to the International Red Cross, since many of
them were not able to see their imprisoned relatives and one of
the political prisoners reported that they had been injured by a
bullet and had not received medical attention.
3. In an effort to justify their abuses, the military personnel
invented a supposed riot by the MRTA political prisoners.
4. We denounce this act as a preparatory cover to justify the
eventual assassination of these political prisoners, as has been
done in the past. For all of these reasons we call for
international solidarity, and we call on all organizations that
defend human rights to denounce these actions and to mobilize
again to Peruvian embassies and consulates in order to
prevent a new massacre of political prisoners, and to bring about
the liberation of these social fighters.
